L’iPad e’ piu’ un computer che un telefono ed il fatto che Apple estenda al mondo dei computer prassi recintate tipiche degli ambienti della telefonia mobile sembra francamente un passo piuttosto coraggioso. Per non dire suicida. Il grande interrogativo delle prossime settimane è se gli utenti acquisteranno in massa un computer con i (grandi) limiti software di un iPhone. Una macchina dove l’ambiente di sviluppo di terze parti, i costi delle applicazioni e la loro disponibilità sono strettamente controllate alla fonte. Nessun altro computer oggi impone mura di cinta tanto alte quanto quelle che ci attendono su iPad anche se, paradossalmente, la Internet degli standard, che copre ormai buona parte degli utilizzi consumer, sarà ampiamente disponibile anche su questi terminali. L’impressione generale è che oggi Apple si senta sufficientemente forte per stringere ulteriormente il cappio intorno al collo della propria clientela, magari imponendo (come si sussurra) due diversi abbonamenti dati per chi possiede iPhone ed iPad, con scelte commerciali tanto ardite quanto discutibili.

Remember, the same thing happened with the iPod Touch, Apple’s iPhone-based PDA. The first-generation iPod Touch could play only a few sounds and even then only at a whisper, so its calendar alarms and new-email alerts were useless unless you wearing its earphones. You couldn’t change the volume without using the touchscreen — a real issue when driving, jogging, or carrying groceries. There was no microphone, so you couldn’t take voice memos or use services like Skype. (Apple even blocked external microphones from working on it!) Despite Apple making sure each iPhone OS revision has continued to support the first-generation iPod Touch, those hardware limits remain in the actual devices. You can bet that similar types of issue will be discovered in the first iPad.

Piuttosto particolare il servizio di sostituzione della batteria offerto da Apple per l’iPad: per 99 dollari preferisce inviarvi a casa un nuovo iPad, piuttosto che cambiare la batteria al vostro.

Steve Jobs ha risposto all’email di un’utente svedese che gli chiedeva se sarà abilitato il tethering tra iPhone e iPad. La risposta di Steve, formata di una sola parola, è stata no (il che è assai deludente).
